For Gay Men, a Fear That Feels Familiar:

When this reporter sent him an e-mail expressing a wish to remain fully clothed while out cruising, the reply from his iPhone was instantaneous: ‘I will be in a burkha :)’”

This article screams of exoticism and fear-mongering. It starts with the reporter descending into the underworld where he describes the patrons like animals on safari, set pieces for a sexy but dangerous playground. He juxtaposes this scene with the figure of the attractive yet precise public health worker administering vaccines to the unknowing masses…

I don’t know…

We’ve come a long way in public health responses to emerging infections, but really haven’t moved far in media responses to AIDS-hysteria and accounts of gay male sexuality. At least we’re talking about it?
